Idea: NYC danger maps
What with faked concrete-strength tests and killer cranes, hellbent development has outstripped city government's ability to act like it cares about what goes up or comes down.
And being a typically pragmatic artistic type, my first thought is: How can I cash in on this?
One way would be to provide maps, updated weekly, that mark potentially dangerous sites to avoid in NYC. Something like the map of crane violations at the NY Times, left, would be a good place to start.
I'm sure plenty of tourists would be willing to pay for these maps; I know it would ruin my vacation if I got crushed under the shoddy construction of a cheap developer.
I can see myself now, pinned under a mountain of failed concrete manufactured by the mob from garbage, school glue and contaminated Three Mile Island sand, trying to salute the U.S. flag -- always displayed at construction sites for just this situation -- as the fire department rescuer yells through a bullhorn "Could you please hold down that screaming? It's upsetting the TV news crew."
Once the maps take off, I could add similar ones for more sensitive tourists, like the map of dangerously ugly building zones, above right.
