
The hydrant above, on Roebling in Williamsburg, displays that telltale indicator of sentience: confusion.
Meanwhile in the East Village, below, a few examples of the "guard rail guard rail" phenomena, where an outer rail protects an inner rail. (Similar to the "bumper bumper" phenomena you see on some cars.)
The tangle below left was on Delancey, east of Essex, for months. They opened a hatch in the already crowded sidewalk and put up the yellow guard rail; then they put up the orange guard rail to protect the yellow one. As you can see, the orange rail needed its own guard rail. The guard on guard below right is near Tompkins Sq. Park; note that the vent inside also has a hat.
